Left the oil fill cap off somehow earlier today and then I got pulled over for a burnt out tailight and a "too loud" exhaust tonight...
It's not like the exhaust is that loud. I think there was a cop hiding out where I got onto the road where I was pulled over. I accelerate "enthusiastically" because my car has no power, and the cop probably felt like ticketing someone...

Ouch. How much was the ticket for "loud exhaust"? My Bug is straight piped and I'm just waiting for the day a police officer in a bad mood pulls me over and hands me a ticket.

Unless he has a decibel meter and the limit is posted, I don't think he can legally give you a ticket.

In VA a defective equipment ticket is only $30(plus $65 in fees...). Thankfully, the cop was pretty decent and only gave me a ticket for the tail light out.
I'm so pissed. I literally work on my car every day. Hell, I checked the damn tail lights a week ago and everything seemed fine...

That's good to know. I'm concerned mostly about residential areas though, like my neighborhood. Some of the highways around where I live have signs that read "noise ordinance enforced." Not entirely sure what that means though.

Ya that sucks but it's nice (if that's what you want to call it) he only cited you for the tail light being out.
And its a proven fact, on my cars at least, that tail/head lights and blinkers will go out just days after you check them.

Is it a stock exhaust? On what kind of vehicle? Were you able to retrieve that oil cap?

It's a Roadstersport 3 exhaust on my '91 Miata. And yeah, I was able to get it before it had a chance to fall out. I was thankful for that, as it's a $45 billet aluminum oil cap.
